Antiques Roadshow expert Andy McConnell holds records on the BBC programme – but he thinks it’s “astonishing” he remained in the position for 20 years.

Antiques Roadshow: Andy McConnell excited over rare glass

One Antiques Roadshow expert is “astonished” that he kept his BBC job for two decades.

Andy McConnell is a glass appraiser who has made £1million flipping properties. He’s also worked at a chicken factory and as a music video producer – but now he holds two records on Antiques Roadshow, for the lowest and highest selling items.

The star confessed that his work has dried up over the years, telling The I Paper: “Years ago, I did 11 of the 12 locations for Antiques Roadshow. But today, I’m about as fashionable as a verruca – a posh, white, heterosexual and ageing man. I’m yesterday’s news.

“It’s an unavoidable fact, even though I don’t necessarily agree with it. But it’s astonishing that I’ve got away with having worked for the BBC for 20 years.”

The star quipped he “should” be paid “at least £78million” per episode, adding: “Knowing what some BBC presenters earn narks me, but it’s a public service broadcaster and I do it for the craic rather than the money. I’m honoured to be part of the Antiques Roadshow team.”

Andy once made £725,000 in a single year from property sales, but by 2023 he was losing money by keeping his antique glass in storage.

His divorce from his wife – with whom he owned the shop Glass Etc. in Rye – in 2020 meant the pair sold up shop, making a £225,000 profit.

The star confessed he was living in a home “unfit for human habitation”, telling This Is Money: “I bought [my home] for £230,000 and it’s definitely gone up in value. It was a total fleapit when I bought it and unmortgagable.

“In fact, the particulars said it was unfit for human habitation so I thought it was just right for me and got £95,000 off the asking price.”
