Who Wants To Be A Millionaire viewers were left stunned during Sunday (March 18) evening’s episode when one of the show’s contestants scooped a staggering £250,000 after correctly answering a challenging science question. Jack Soley, a bus driver from Swindon, was first in the hot seat with host Jeremy Clarkson. The player steadily climbed the prize ladder on the ITV quiz show answering an array of increasingly difficult questions.

During the episode, savvy Jack decided to use up his lifelines – Ask the Audience, Phone a Friend and 50-50 – to answer some of the problems. After securing the £64,000 safety net, he boldly tackled the £125,000 question, correctly identifying the piece of classical music featured in the opening sequence of Barbie and 2001. Now with a pot of £125,000 at stake, Jeremy posed the £250,000 question to him. “Which of these words can be spelled in full by combining chemical symbols from the periodic table of elements?”. Jack was given four options: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Science. According to DataGenetics there approximately 47,035 words that can be created using the letters featured in the symbols. After carefully talking Jeremy through the options, he confidently locked in “Physics” as his final answer. He told the host: “I think I’ve just figured it out.” Although Jeremy warned him how much was at stake if he got it wrong he replied: “At the moment I’m thinking it’s Physics.” He then added: “Physics, final answer.”

With all eyes on him, things got tense as Jack started to second-guess himself. He worriedly said:”I don’t know what I’ve done now.” However, Clarkson quickly confirmed he was correct, and revealed he’d secured him a quarter of a million pounds. Although he had the opportunity to go for £500,000, with no lifelines left and uncertainty about the answer, Jack wisely chose to walk away with his winnings.

Viewers praised his performance, with one person on X writing, “Fantastic. What a contestant. Properly well deserved!” Another viewer added, “Brilliant player. Loved how he took chances.” And someone else penned: “Tough gig bus driver glad he’s taking home a big win.”

Now in its astounding 41st series, the show has been gracing TV screens since its 1998 debut with Chris Tarrant at the helm until 2014. After a four-year hiatus, it made a comeback in 2018, with Jeremy Clarkson taking over as the face of the reinvigorated ITV1 programme.
