Fans were left in stitches during the latest episode of University Challenge, with some labelling one contestant’s response during a music round as “the funniest answer ever.” On Monday night (24 March), it was Darwin College, Cambridge, versus Bristol University to fight for a place in the semi-final. As usual, journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan was on hand to read out the questions, and during one music and picture bonus round, the team from Darwin, Cambridge, attempted to answer as many questions correctly as possible.

The picture round involved a map showing the United States of America and a photo of a musical artist. The team was then asked to correctly name the singer or band and the title of the single, which included the name of the settlement shown. One question involved an image of singer Tina Turner, but the team couldn’t quite work out the 1973 song name or settlement.

Instead, they gave a wild guess, with the captain saying, “This is so wrong – is it Chattanooga Choo Choo?” This prompted the audience and host Amol to start laughing. He then informed them that the correct answer was “Nutbush City Limits.” Many fans couldn’t help but react on social media to the blunder. One person posted on X: “I’m surprised that the Darwin team didn’t know the Tina Turner song Nutbush City Limits.”

A second person also commented: “#universitychallenge Unusual to have NOT heard of Nutbush City Limits, but to know Chattanooga ChooChoo.” A third also typed: “Tina Turner – Chattanopga Choo Choo. Gotta be funniest answer EVER!! #UniversityChallenge.”

At the end of the match, both teams ended on the tiebreak with 150 points each. It was then down to whoever got the first answer correctly without buzzing and getting it wrong. The captain from Darwin, Cambridge managed to press his buzzer and get the right answer, expressing his delight and said, “Yes!” when Amol confirmed that he’d said it correctly.

Amol then exclaimed: “Dear, dear, dear. I’m going to have a heart attack if you keep doing this to me! Oh, Bristol, you’ll watch this back over, and you’ll see starters and bonuses, which you will know. That’s the first time you’ve lost a game – but you’ve lost to a brilliant team.”
