Farmer Gareth Wyn Jones hit out at Keir Starmer as he clashed with a former Labour politician over changes to inheritance tax for farmers.

GB News: Guests have argument over inheritance tax

A furious row erupted on GB News over Labour’s decision to raise inheritance tax for farmers.

Farmer Gareth Wyn Jones slammed Keir Starmer as he clashed with former Labour Minister, Denis MacShane. In October’s Budget, chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a 20% inheritance tax that will apply to farms worth more than £1m from April 2026

Farmers argued that the changes will destroy family farms, however, the government says it will make no difference to food security and have claimed only the wealthiest of landowners will be hit.

The decision sparked fury amongst rural communities, with Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), branding it a “betrayal”.

Farmers are now staging another tractor protest outside Parliament on Monday (February 10) as they continue their campaign against the changes.

Speaking on Monday’s instalment of GB news, which was hosted by Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello, Gareth said: “Nobody wants to listen to what we’re trying to tell them.”

Explaining the severity of the situation for farmers, Gareth continued: “Our job is on its knees. We’re out seven days a week making sure we can produce food. The profits in our industry are awful.”

Denis argued that his grandchildren won’t inherit his wealth as the farmer hit back: “It’s different for you.”

The former MP said he can’t pass on his inheritance because he has to pay tax, declaring: “There’s two things you can’t avoid in life, death and income tax.”

Things turned heated as Gareth revealed four per cent of the country pay inheritance tax, adding that the government’s new rules will impact any farm worth over £1 million.

“It’s our land that we need to produce affordable food for you,” Gareth said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on the left or the right.”

Denis pointed out that Gareth has a “very big farm” and “even owns a mountain”, leading the farmer to immediately hit back: “No I don’t own a mountain. Let’s be honest.”

He continued: “We have mountain rights and this where people look at farmers as they look at us as asset rich,” later adding: “The Labour government has brought this on. Don’t blame the NFU, don’t blame anybody.

Hitting out at the prime minster, Gareth fumed: “Keir Starmer promised he was going to protect family farms and he’s come in with a bombshell that’s going to kill them.”
