The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards aired an emotional tribute to the stars who died over the last year, leaving viewers in floods of tears.
Hosted by David Tennant, the broadcast saw the biggest names in British film descend on London’s South Bank for the BAFTA Awards, but viewers were overcome with emotion.
Jeff Goldblum brought his special touch to the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony’s In Memoriam segment in London on Sunday, performing As Time Goes By on the piano while the names and faces of beloved industry figures who died over the past year were shown on a screen.
The academy paid tribute to the stars we’ve lost over the last year including Dame Maggie Smith, Lion King star James Earl Jones, who died in September aged 93, as well as director David Lynch after his death aged 78 last month.
The Shining’s Shelley Duvall appeared in BAFTA’s In Memoriam tribute after her death last year at the age of 75, alongside The Undoing’s Donald Sutherland, Lone Star’s Kris Kristofferson and theatre star Joan Plowright.

Viewers noted two television stars including Brian Murphy and Timothy West were not included in the memoriam, however, the academy confirmed to Express Online television stars will be remembered at the TV Awards in May.
A spokesperson said: “Bernard Hill was remembered in our TV Awards ceremony In Memoriam last year. We will pay tribute to those from the television industry who have sadly died during the past year in our TV Awards ceremony in May.”
It comes after a social media user suggested famed actor Bernard Hill was also missing from the tribute. However, the academy paid tribute to the actor at the BAFTA Awards last year.
An X user penned: “Sad and disappointed that brian murphy was not included in the bafta in memoriam section. they had plenty of time to fit a tribute in especially with the contribution he gave to tv and movies over his lifetime. his fans wont forget him, and his legacy will live on #BAFTA2025.”
Brian sadly died in February this year aged 92 and was best known for his roles in the Last Summer of Wine and sitcom George and Mildred.

Social media users reacted to the post and suggested he will most likely be recognised at the BAFTA TV Awards which is held later this year.
One wrote: “It’s the BAFTA film awards he will be in the memoriam section of the BAFTA tv awards in the summer.”
A second penned: “He’ll be in the BAFTA TV Awards In Memoriam section, I’m sure.”

Another noted the late actor Timothy West missing from the memorial writing, “And missed the amazing late Timothy West who died in November 2024 who actually won a BAFTA.”
Timothy was known for roles on stage and screen including in TV sitcoms Not Going Out and Bedtime, dramas such as Bleak House and Gentleman Jack, and soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders.
The BAFTAs often pays tribute to beloved stars who have appeared on screen, however, most filmstars are honoured at the film awards while stars who have appeared on the small-screen are honoured at the television awards which takes place in the summer.
Meanwhile, others admitted they were in tears following the moving tribute as one shared: “That’s so sad. Memorial. Rip to all of these talents #BAFTA2025.”
Another said: “I can’t stop crying.”
A third added: “Such a moving performance, what a talent Jeff Goldblum is #BAFTAs,” a fourth agreed: “Beautiful tribute.”
