This City is Ours has been airing on BBC One with the whole season available to watch on iPlayer, but is there more to come?
This City is Ours airs on BBC One
This City Is Ours has proven to be popular with BBC viewers and the Liverpool-based gang drama stars some huge names, including Sean Bean and Julie Graham. The series follows crime boss Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean), who is planning to retire.
His impending exit triggers a power struggle between his partner Michael Kavanagh (James Nelson-Joyce), and his ambitious son Jamie (Jack McMullen). The eight-episode drama was awarded five stars by The Daily Telegraph, with James Nelson-Joyce’s performance standing out.
The New Statesman described it as “marvellous and witty”, with The Times awarding the show four stars and praising the “modern, witty and authentic” dialogue. Fans are keen to find out whether there will be another season of the high-stakes drama.
Veteran actor Sean Bean offered some insight about the show’s future ahead of it making its debut. He told the BBC: “There has not been anything like it before and I’m very pleased that I have been a part of it.
“I want it to have a long future – everyone involved in it deserves success.” While the series has not officially been renewed for a second season, Sean is hopeful about the scope for future episodes.

Julie Graham, who plays Elaine Phelan, described the series as “addictive”, adding: “I have been impressed at how everyone has a description for it. Someone said it’s ’a roller coaster ride’ and I like that.
“Someone else said it’s a ‘Scouse Sopranos’. It becomes quite addictive, and if you watch episode one you will want to see it through to episode eight. You will soon become addicted to these characters, there are no weak links.”
However, creator Stephen Butchard took more of a realist approach, saying he had only planned to write what he was originally commissioned for.
He explained: “I was commissioned to do eight episodes. I did not call it ‘Series One’. This City is Ours could never have been, say, a film because I would not have had the chance to develop the characters, and they are all important to me.
Michael Kavanagh and Diana Williams are in love
“I don’t sit there saying, ‘Oh this plot will be developed further in series two or three and so on’.
“In This City is Ours I set out to write a fantastic story from episode one to episode eight – a tale of real life and real emotions where families are dragged deeper and deeper into confrontation.
“I have set it in a real world, a chilling, mostly unseen universe of organised crime. It is a love story. A story of love and what people will do to seize and hold on to power.”
The series ended on a violent and tense note as Michael’s role in the gang was confirmed, but some questions remain unanswered as some surprising revelations came to light.
Viewers will have to wait and see whether the BBC decides to renew the series for another season.
