Viewers of the The 1% Club were left speechless after a contestant made show history on Saturday night.

Hosted by Lee Mack, 56, the latest episode of the ITV quiz programme saw a contestant win a record-breaking amount.

The show sees 100 hopefuls answer 15 logic-based questions that were put to the public. The percentage who got it right determines its difficulty in each round.

Aptly, the final question is one that just 1 per cent of the public were able to answer and, this week, five contestants made it to that fateful moment.

However, out of the eager group only one – Matthew – answered the question correctly and won the whopping prize of £99,000.

The final question read: ‘If you remove all of the underlined letters from the sentence below, what word can be spelt if you rearrange all of the remaining letters?’

Matthew answered the question correctly and won the whopping prize of £99,000

It showed, ‘ANIMAL TO SHUN IN STAMPEDE,’ with several letters underlined in red.

Matthew was the only one to give the right answer, submitting ‘elephant.’

Lee said: ‘Congratulations Matthew, you are the winner and get everything in the prize pot. You’ve just won £99,000.’

Matthew responded: ‘Crazy, can’t believe it… I nearly went out twice on the bride and groom question, and the one before that I was so close and I’d used my pass before, but I saw it straight away.’

It comes after viewers slammed the show’s final question in a previous episode as ‘the easiest ever,’ after a string of contestants got it wrong, leaving them empty-handed earlier this month.

The players were faced with a choice – take home a share of £10,000 (£2,000 each), or answer the final question for the chance to win a prize pot of £96,000.

Only one player decided to take their share, Christopher, who said he felt his luck might run out, while the other four played on.

But only one contestant chose to answer the question, and got it wrong, meaning no one walked away with any cash.

The question was: ‘The words below share a specific pattern. Why could VOTING also be part of the group?’, and the words listed were ‘Bandleader, Nickelodeo and Silverback.’

It was then revealed that the three words all contained names of metals: Lead, Nickel, Silver and Tin, and viewers were to quick to slam the ‘easy question’ for featuring in the final round.

The 1% Club airs on ITV and streams on ITVX.

Matthew responded: 'Crazy, can't believe it... I nearly went out twice on the bride and groom question, and the one before that I was so close and I'd used my pass before!'
