Paddy McGuinness can no longer enjoy being single as much as he did after first becoming a television star.

The comedian, 51, began to make a name for himself in the early 2000s after featuring in Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights sitcom. And the former Top Gear presenter spoke about how much he relished his younger days on a podcast this week with Irish comedians known as The 2 Johnnies.

Hinting at being a ladies’ man, Paddy, who said he only got paid £4,000 for season one of Phoenix Nights, said: “But I was having a good time as well as the money with telly, it was kind of like, I had that mindset of going out, women, free drinks in bars, I was only 20 odd. It’s like, you know, working class lad, that’s what you kind of think…”

Interjecting, one of the hosts said: “That’s all the stuff you want to do when you get on telly.” Paddy, inspiring laughs, responded: “I still do lad, being honest, just too old now.”

He also confirmed that people on the street shout “single man, reveal yourself” at him since his divorce from Christine McGuinness, 36, a reference to one of his Take Me Out catchphrases. The pair, who have three children together, married in 2011, but they announced their shock split in 2022.

They both released statements on Instagram at the time, saying: “This was not an easy decision to make but we’re moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children. We’ll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together.”

Being a funny man at heart, Paddy could not help but joke about the separation during his conversation with The 2 Johnnies.

He was speaking about his new standup tour and pre-show jitters when he said: “It is a different style of show but I have just started the second leg and it has been going down an absolute storm.

“I still get that feeling just before I go, going ‘f***, why are we doing this’? And then I remember I am divorced… Oh yeah, that’s why! I have no money. But honestly it has been doing really really well.”
