Renee Salt has spoken to This Morning’s Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary about her experience during the Holocaust.
During their discussion on Tuesday (April 15), the ITV host questioned what her memories were of Bergen-Belsen and her time there.
Dermot said: “We read so much about it, and we’ve seen the footage. But, from someone who was there, it just seems unimaginable.”
Renee replied: “I came to Bergen-Belsen on a train from Hamburg, they stopped us in the middle of nowhere, they started screaming, ‘Get off the train, be quick.’ Which we did, we jumped off.
“We had to hold on to one another to remain standing, we were gasping for water, it was so hot already. It was April, it was hot. They lined us up and they took us to a hut.”

Renee explained they were all made to walk through miles of woodland after being taken off of the train until they made it to the gates of the camp. She added: “They opened up the gates and we’re pushed through.
“The scene that met us there, it’s not possible to describe. Here, we saw skeletons walking, their arms and legs were like matchsticks. Their eyes bulged grotesquely out of their skull-like faces.
“Some were dressed in rags, others were naked. The stench that arose from the camp was impossible to describe.” Renee was visibly emotional as she recalled the harrowing moments, admitting to Alison and Dermot they had already been through so much.

Through tears, she said: “This was something different, horrifyingly different.”
Elsewhere, Renee explained that before being moved to the camp, she was forced to do slave labour in Hamburg. She said: “We had to carry sacks of cement on my back.”
Detailing that she was around the age of 14 when this happened, Alison highlighted Renee was only a child. Renee revealed: “I still suffer from my back, I still suffer from my back. The pain never left me.”
Watching Renee overcome with emotion had viewers watching at home moved to tears as they commented on her harrowing recollection.

Another commented: “This lady is obviously so distressed, I hope there is support there for her.” Someone else wrote: “What a brave lady.. bless her.”
With another viewer adding: “Tears running down my face as I listened to this most incredible and humbling woman who exudes courage in every breath. #ThisMorning @thismorning. We can never ever forget.”
