Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway was comforted by Renee Zellweger as she shared a heartbreaking confession about Derek during an interview.
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway shared a heartbreaking confession about her late husband Derek Draper as she opened up to Bridget Jones star Renee Zellweger.
Kate and Renee sat down to discuss her new film, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which focuses on Bridget’s love life following the tragic death of her husband Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth.
As Kate made the comparison about Bridget’s tragedy to her own, as her husband Derek Draper died last year, Renee was quite to comfort the presenter.
Renee, 55, listened as Kate remarked, “Everybody thinks they’ve got a bit of Bridget Jones in them or they know a Bridget Jones! ” She added candidly, “It’s usually the loveable bits, mine are always the klutzy bits and the falling over and all those other bits as well.”
Kate said: “Since we last spoke, it has become very personal as I have lost my husband, become a single mum, raising two kids on my own, one of them called Billy. How is it for you, do you tap into a personal loss?”

Renee responded: “Well first of all, I’m sorry, that’s very fresh, it’s probably very raw for you still” to which Kate admitted: “Yeah, I think it is.”
In a touching moment, Renee consoled the Good Morning Britain presenter, assuring her: “Of course it is! ” eliciting a heartfelt “Thank you! ” from a moved Kate.
The tragic loss of Kate’s husband Derek Draper in January 2024 at age 56 came nearly four years after his battle with severe COVID-19 complications.
At the time, Kate announced, “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.”
She shared the intimate details of Derek’s final moments, “Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.”
Kate concluded with a message of gratitude and a touching farewell, “Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully no
