Professional dancer Amy Dowden has teased that she was feeling “nervous” ahead of a review with her oncologist almost two years on from her cancer diagnosis. She also shared an empowering message in the update to fans.

Amy, 34, had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and the following year she announced that there was “no evidence of disease” after having treatment. She returned to Strictly Come Dancing last year following an absence – though later withdrew after sustaining an injury – and more recently featured on the BBC show’s subsequent tour. She shared an update with her followers on Instagram this morning after her new Reborn tour with Carlos Gu, 32, opened last week. Amy posted a photo of herself back in hospital for an injection – after previously sharing that she will need one each month for around five years – and she reflected on her life now in the accompanying caption.

Amy wrote: “After the most amazing surreal week, today is a reminder of how lucky I am! To ‘go grab life’. Make the most of every day and every opportunity! It’s that time of the month on the oncology unit and followed by a review with my oncologist (always makes me a little nervous).”

She continued: “But it always brings me back to reality being here! It reminds me how lucky I am, how far I’ve come and always grateful to the NHS. Actually [as] soon as I walked in one of my lovely nurses said Amy your hair is in a bobble.”

Sharing her plans, she added: “I leave here later today and travel to join the cast back on tour in Scotland. How LUCKY AM I! I’m truly feeling stronger, more inspired than ever before. Certainly AMY THE DANCER IS BACK AND TODAY IS THAT REALITY OF HOW LUCKY I AM AND CONTINUE STRIVING TO ALWAYS BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF ME.”

The update comes a week after Amy and Strictly co-star Carlos’ Reborn tour opened in Birmingham on March 10. She reflected on the experience a few days later, writing that it had “unleashed a new Amy” in a post on the platform.

She wrote: “Reborn, we are the on the road! The feeling on the stage the past two nights has been MAGICAL, EMOTIONAL, JOYFUL and THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE FEELING! To our incredible dancers, Andrea and of stage crew, THANK YOU. You guys are so talented and just beautiful energy to be around!

“22 full on dance routines, from all styles, we pushed ourselves out side of our comfort zones and our creative director/choreographer queen, Beth we can never thank you enough. This show is more than we ever imagined. You have unleashed a NEW AMY! [Neil Jones] thank you for your fabulous routines.”

She concluded: “Thank you to everyone who has come so far, your love, support and reaction has been everything! Thank you! Living the dream! [Carlos] my darling friend, I love sharing and dancing with you my crazy, wild, loving, talented soul!”

Whilst promoting the tour, Amy recently teased over the prospect of being part of Strictly’s line-up this year. The dancer had been partnered with JLS member JB Gill last year prior to her withdrawal, after having been absent, except for some guest appearances, on the show amid cancer treatment.

Asked if her and Carlos will be returning for the next series, she told the Mirror in an interview published last month: “We are waiting to find out, fingers crossed.” She added that they would “love” to return for another series of Strictly.

Amy went on to share that she had put “pressure” on herself last year and would be able to “truly” enjoy herself this year if she’s part of the line-up. She said: “I really do truly feel like Amy again. Last year, I wasn’t confident in myself really deep down.” The pro added that she was “still trying to accept everything” and “didn’t look the same”.
