Sky News was paused as it was announced that former Bank of England governor Mark Carney has won the race to succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister.

Carney, 59, has been named as the leader of Canada’s liberal party after securing 131,674 votes, winning by 85.9% of the vote.

Sky News presenter Barbara Serra was joined by their international correspondent Diana Magnay, who pointed out the “astonishing difference” between Carney and Chrystia Freeland, long-running deputy prime minister who resigned at the end of last year.

Magnay said: “She only got 8% of the vote and Mark Carney coming in with nearly 86%. That is absolutely astonishing. He promised a mandate for change within the liberal party and I think that’s clearly what people wanted. They wanted someone who is an economic stronghand.”

Carney claimed that economics is Carney’s “bread and butter”, as he’s been the governor of both the Bank of England and Canada.

“This was clear that they just wanted to move away from the politics of the last decade, of Justin Trudeau with whom Chrystia Freeland was so closely implicated,” she continued. “Mark Carney is a solid figure in terms of the economy and therefore dealing with Donald Trump.”

Magnay added that Carney doesn’t have the political experience like Freeland did, but “in his own words, he has been a leader”.

In much of his victory speech, Carney attacked Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canada and said he wants to make the country the 51st US state.

Carney declared: “Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form. We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.

“Americans should make no mistake”, he warned. “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

He repeatedly referred to the US president by name and said his government would keep retaliatory tariffs in place until “America shows us respect”.

The Liberal leader claimed Trump was “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses”, adding: “We can’t let him succeed.”

Carney, who is expected to be sworn in as PM in the coming days, has never served in elected office.
