The new editor of This Morning has been confirmed after Martin Frizell announced he was stepping down to care for his wife Fiona Phillips, who has Alzheimer’s.

This Morning’s new editor has been revealed months after Martin Frizell announced he was stepping down from the position.

The 66-year-old confirmed that he was leaving his role after 10 years to spend more time with his wife, Fiona Phillips, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.

From March 3, Vivek Sharma will be the editor of This Morning. Vivek is already a known presence on This Morning, having been associate editor on the award-winning daytime programme for the last 15 months.

Of his new position, Vivek said: “Having grown up watching the show, it’s an incredible privilege and honour to take on the role of editor of This Morning.

“Over the last 37 years, the show has become a national institution and has been responsible for some of the most memorable moments on television.”

Vivek continued: “It’s a cherished part of millions of people’s mornings on TV and on social media, where someone interacts with This Morning content every second.

“The team on and off camera are world-class and I can’t wait to work alongside them in my new role, as we shape the future of this iconic brand.”

Vivek has been in commercial TV production for 20 years, having previously worked on Good Morning Britain and Lorraine. He has also worked behind the scenes on Steph’s Packed Lunch, Sky News and TalkTV.

He was reportedly brought in at This Morning after Fiona announced her Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2023, with the intention of shadowing Martin until he eventually left.

Martin announced his departure from This Morning in a statement shared in November, saying: “Next year I’m expecting my family priorities to change so I need to free up time for them.

“I love my team at ITV and will miss them and the thrill of live telly but it’s an always on, 24 hours a day, seven days a week commitment and I won’t be able to do both.”

An ITV source said how Martin was struggling to run things how he usually would following his wife’s heartbreaking diagnosis.

“Martin has been talking about this for a while,” they said. “He and Emma Gormley, the head of daytime, have been regularly discussing when might be the time he decides to leave This Morning.”

The source continued: “It has been ten years and the last few have been very difficult, what with Holly and Phil going and the fall out from that and now it’s time.

“Martin micro manages everything on This Morning, from the colours to the lighting to the scripts, he is over every bit of detail and he can’t do that with Fiona’s condition deteriorating. It is very sad.”
