Good Morning Britain was halted for a double breaking news announcement. Monday’s (March 10) edition of the ITV programme was fronted by Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, with Sean Fletcher also in the studio to deliver the rest of the day’s news. But the 50-year-old’s report came to a sudden pause as he shared some urgent information with viewers.

The first was about disruptions on the motorway as Sean began: “Breaking news to bring you. Passengers travelling by car to Heathrow airport are facing delays after a vehicle caught fire in a tunnel early this morning. Traffic has built up on both the M4 and both sides of the A4. Heathrow has confirmed road access to terminals 2 and 3 is partially restricted.”

In positive news, Sean confirmed there had been no reports of any injuries from the incident. This was immediately followed by more breaking news received in the hour about Russia.

“Russia’s federal security service has said two people connected to Britain’s embassy in Moscow have been ordered to leave the country accused of spying,” Sean revealed.

“Russia’s state news agency TASS reported the diplomats have been stripped of their accreditation by the FSB which claimed it uncovered what it called signs of intelligence and sabotage work which threatens Russia’s national security.”

Both were ordered to leave Russia within two weeks.

The second secretary of the British embassy in Moscow and the spouse of another British diplomat were the ones who were stripped of accreditation, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported.

“Russia’s FSB will continue working to combat the reconnaissance and disruptive activities of foreign intelligence agencies by all available means,” the statement added.

There was no immediate comment from Britain.

In February the Foreign Office stripped a Russian diplomat of their accreditation, with David Lammy saying the UK will be “unapologetic” in standing up to Vladimir Putin.

This was in response to what the Foreign Office said was a “baseless” decision to expel a British diplomat from Russia on suspicion of spying in November last year.

TASS state media said: “An employee of the British Embassy in Moscow has been stripped of his accreditation for providing false information when entering the Russian Federation. His work revealed signs of intelligence activities.”
