BBC Death in Paradise fans were left surprised by a new landmark on Friday’s episode (February 28) of the crime drama series. Set on the fictional tropical island of Saint Marie, the series has captivated fans for 14 seasons with its complex murder mysteries covering the island in a variety of different settings. But the latest episode opened with two local female football teams squaring off in a big outdoor stadium.

Some fans were confused by the appearance of the large structure as it had never been spotted before on the quaint island. One fan said on X: “14 seasons on the tiny island of Saint Marie and we’ve never seen a football stadium before” another agreed: “nice stadium, which has never been seen before” and “Women’s football on death in paradise! Since when do they have a stadium”

This week’s episode saw DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) continue to integrate himself into island life, this time by watching a local women’s football match.

Half-time reveals a shocking scene as the star player is found dead in the locker rooms with a fatal gunshot wound, which are only accessible from the pitch.

The episode featured a variety of familiar faces. Among the women footballers is Grace Devon who is portrayed by actress Rita Bernard-Shaw.

Fans may recognize her from Growin’ Pains, The Nevers, Van der Valk and the Prime Video series The Power. Actor Bobby Gordon, who portray the referee, has played Nathan in Youngers, Toby Faroe in Hollyoaks, Shelton Powell in ITV ‘s Three Little Birds and Tom in The Phoebus Files.

In masterful fashion the detectives solved the crime, but fans were left confused by the explanation, as it was discovered the gun shot wound happened before match. The player decided to play anyway despite the injury due to the high stakes of the game, and bled out afterwards in the locker room.

“I’m sorry none of this makes sense, if you are shot in the leg at point blank range like that, you are not doing anything,” blasted one fan.

“She was shot before the game and strapped up. Hmmm” said another. A third agreed: “Covering up a bullet wound to go play football, silly fool.” The episode ended on cliffhanger as DI Mervin decided reopen the case inot his mother’s death after some digging by his colleague Naomi
