‘Something was clearly wrong’
Kate Garraway has spoken out about being rushed to hospital over heart attack fears, in the midst of caring for her late husband Derek.
Former political advisor Derek sadly passed away in January 2024 aged 56. He suffered from serious health complications after contracting Covid-19 in 2020.
However, Kate has now shared that while looking after Derek, she suffered her own terrifying health scare.

Recalling the health scare, Kate told The Sun that she woke up with a “searing chest pain” before leaving for work at Good Morning Britain.
Kate said: “I could barely move, but I forced myself into the car. On the way in, I threw up. By the time I arrived at the studio, something was clearly wrong. Dr Hilary told the producers to call an ambulance.”
Once Kate was at hospital, the medical team shared their concerns that she was having a heart attack.

Heart attack fears
“Instead of going on air, I was in hospital, wired to machines, with doctors fearing a heart attack,” Kate revealed.
Kate – mum to two children Darcey, 19 and Billy, 15, with Derek – was instead diagnosed with a “heart event”.
According to her, this was down to the toll caring for Derek had on her own body.
She shared: “The stress of fighting for Derek to get the support he needed along with the physical demands of being a primary carer 24 hours a day was such a strain that my body was feeling the effect.”

Kate’s tough past year
Following the death of Derek – who Kate married in 2005 – she has had a tough 17 months.
In March of last year, Kate confessed that she was in debt after paying £16,000 a month for Derek’s healthcare.
It was reported at the time that she still owed £800,000 for his healthcare.
Speaking on GMB at the time, she said: “I am ashamed of the fact that I am in debt. I have an incredible job that I love, that’s very well paid. I’m not a carer, travelling miles, paying their own transport to go and help somebody for minimum wage. I’m somebody who is very well paid and so I just feel ashamed that I couldn’t make it work,” she then added.
