Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway has had a tough year, following the death of her husband Derek Draper last January and her daughter moving out of the £4 million London property.

Kate Garraway has faced a difficult time over the last year, yet she continues to battle on despite the death of her beloved late husband Derek, financial woes and juggling her TV career.

The Good Morning Britain presenter also faced another huge blow in September at the end of last year, when her daughter moved out of the £4 million family home in London and flew the nest, to go to university.

It comes following Derek Draper’s sad passing in January 2024 last year. He fell into a coma at the start of Covid in 2020 and was put on a ventilator, however tragically passed away following a cardiac arrest in his fight.

The late author returned home from hospital in April 2021 but still required intense care and assistance. Mum-of-two Kate worked tirelessly to adapt their family home to support him, after he required round the clock medical care.

The family home, which Kate shared with Derek and their two kids, was significantly personalised for Derek’s needs, including a lift and a completely redesigned ground floor.

Kate ensured the house was wheelchair-accessible, and added a wet room, alarm system, and a ground-floor bedroom. Not only did she need to juggle this, but she had to adapt to becoming a sole income household.

The changes to Kate’s family home were revealed in her heart-wrenching documentary, Finding Derek, which won the inspiring journalist a National Television Award in 2021.

Kate faced further financial difficulties during Derek’s battle when their psychotherapy business Astra Aspera closed with debts of £184,000 in 2022. The renovations of adapting their home and Derek’s care “wiped her out financially”.

Derek’s death, over a year ago now, marked the end of an emotionally and physically sad period for the family. Kate has continued to have a positive outlook on life and has thrown herself into work and milestones still happen without Derek there.

She immediately and bravely threw herself back into work at the ITV studios, and continues to power on, currently appearing on the new series of Celebrity Bake Off. Let’s take a closer look inside the £4 million family property as the award-winning television host rebuilds her life…

Derek Draper

Kate spent thousands on professional care for Derek, who needed constant medical attention before his untimely death from a cardiac arrest at the age of 56. The GMB star’s honourable care for him saw him power on or nearly four years after contracting Covid.

Derek fell into a coma at the start of the global pandemic in 2020 and was put on a ventilator – becoming Britain’s longest suffering Covid victim as he spent 13 months in hospital. Their family home was adapted to ensure it was wheelchair accessible, and met all Kate’s late husband”s needs.

The moving documentary was recorded while their wet room was still under construction, with builders seen preparing to install a toilet.

Kate shared a snap from the family home earlier this year admitting she was feeling ‘overwhelmed’ and trying to keep her head above water when it came to maintaining the garden space. Her mum and dad surprised her with a wheelbarrow to lighten the workload. “Love you so much mum and dad – you always know the best way to get me out there & going forward,” she captioned the social media post.
