Kate Garraway goes “from hero to zero” on this week’s Celebrity Bake Off after clinching a coveted Hollywood handshake in one task – but flopping horribly in another. At one point the Good Morning Britain star gasps: “That was a lot better than I ever could have dreamed of.”

And her happiness is cemented when Paul, 59, brands her bake “absolutely delicious” and stretches out his arm. Looking stunned, the TV star squeals: “Oh my God, I got a handshake!” Afterwards she laughs: “It felt like love. I think there was a moment where he had to un-peel my fingers.”

But comedian Phil Wang jokes that he does not believe her claim that she cooks with plenty of flavour and enthusiasm but “not necessarily much skill”. He quips: “I think she is a baker – and a liar.” And looking at his own effort he sighs: “I think I’m more likely to get a Hollywood punch in the face than a handshake.”

Kate, 57, is brought back down to earth with a bump when her mixture for the technical challenge goes horribly wrong and she sighs: “Look at the state of this. You could tarmac the M25 with this.” She adds: “It’s just hopeless. The jam has turned to concrete. I literally don’t know what to do.” And after her disaster she says: “I don’t think anyone’s gone from hero to zero quite so fast as I did.”

For the showstopper, the celebs are charged with creating their “hidden talent” out of choux pastry. Phil makes his own torso – complete with a six-pack – claiming that he is a regular at the gym and explaining: “The judges laughed a lot about how ripped I am – which shows how hidden this talent is.”

But the biggest laughs were for Sophie Willan’s busty bake, which saw her recreating her own boobs – complete with raspberry nipples. “I’m still getting my head around your hidden talent being that you can carry things under your breasts,” Paul splutters. To help him understand, the Alma’s Not Normal star Sophie – who was nominated for a comedy performance Bafta this week, along with the show itself – picks up a jar of sugar and insists: “Honestly, I could get this whole jar, bob it under and go for a walk.” As the judges and contestants laugh, Sophie says she can hide anything in this way, listing “phone, bank card, wallet, passport” as examples.

There is another shock in store for Paul when a bake from Famalam and Black Ops star Gbemisola Ikumelo nearly knocks him off his feet. “I like a bit of heat but even now it’s burning the back of my throat,” he gasps. “It’s like I’ve been punched.” Fellow juge Caroline Waldegrave agrees: “It suddenly hits you doesn’t it? You get waves of chilli.”

And there is plenty more celebrity chaos in the Channel 4 episode,with one celeb forgetting to add baking powder during one challenge and another omitting the yeast later on.
