A contestant who appeared on The 1% Club has shared some behind-the-scenes secrets hot on the heels of his stint on the popular quiz show.

Kyle Talbot, 27, featured on Saturday’s episode of the ITV programme hosted by Lee Mack, 56.

The team leader from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, first found the show accidentally whilst ‘flicking through’ TV channels one day and decided to apply last year.

After going through the application process, which even involved a quiz over zoom in the style of The 1% Club, Kyle found himself in the studio with Lee in November.

Though he didn’t make it past the second question, Kyle described the ‘surreal experience’ to MailOnline and shared his thoughts on the show.

Kyle revealed how he believes contestants were ‘strategically placed and seated’ next to specific people during the quiz.

He explained: ‘Let’s say for example I’m from Grimsby, we’ve got a football rivalry with Wrexham quite a bit, I was sat next to someone from Wrexham. I think that’s done purposely, which is a good laugh.’

Kyle described himself as ‘quite a big fan of Lee Mack’.

The presenter regularly jokes around with contestants during the show and Kyle said Lee came across as ‘polite, a good laugh and kind of what you want him to be in a way’.

The 27-year-old added: ‘It’s a great experience being in the room with him as well.’

The filming process took just over seven hours for Kyle’s episode, including a warm-up comedian who helped everyone to feel comfortable.

The entire day resulted in the single, one-hour instalment that aired on Saturday.

Contestants were given one break and Kyle explained how halfway through filming, they were given the chance to have a dance and let loose in a ‘disco atmosphere sort of thing,’ which Lee joined in with.

Kyle described the day as a ‘surreal experience’ and although the cameras are not placed ‘in sight’, he explained that knowing you’re being filmed for TV still played on his mind.

For his episode, he described the questions as a ‘mixed bag’ and said: ‘The biggest achievement for everybody going on is making sure you get the first question right. At least don’t go out the first, which luckily I did get the first question right at least.’

Though Kyle got the 1% question correct during the audition quiz, he went out on the second question with 25 other contestants and admitted: ‘The one I went out on, I would say it was probably more understood by older people.’

To prepare for the show, Kyle watched previous series and clips, but admitted ‘it potentially doesn’t help, because you don’t know what’s going to be asked, it’s going to be different questions anyway.’

He added: ‘I think it’s more just kind of watching them back to almost try and learn what to look at, sometimes the answer’s in the question, sometimes it’s not.’

If he had won the jackpot, which has been as high as £99,000 in a previous episode, Kyle said he would have spent some of the money on travelling and some on a house or property investment.

As for his tips for those wanting to apply to The 1% Club, Kyle recommends watching the show to become familiar with it, but to also ‘not to overthink or overprepare’.

‘I suppose even practising questions, doing it to a timer, because if 30 seconds feels fast at home, 30 seconds live in the studio feels like about three seconds.’
