BBC Breakfast’s long-serving news anchor Naga Munchetty has opened up about a recent health ordeal that left her in unbearable pain and forced the TV star to call for an ambulance.
The 49-year-old shared her experience of being diagonsed with adenomyosis in 2023. She described how medical experts struggled to detect the condition at first.
Explaining how her symptoms had initially been down as the result of a “normal period”, Naga explained how they were anything but.
She told The Times: “(A normal period) It’s not throwing up. It’s not diarrhoea. It’s not hugging a toilet and crying because you’re sweating through pain, fainting, cramped over, loading yourself up with painkillers way more than you should be, from the age of 15.”

Recalling the painful impact of the condition, the news presenter shared how on one occasion she was left with no other choice than to call an ambulance as her symptoms became too severe. During her ordeal she told her husband, renowned TV director James Haggar, that he should not let doctors perform a hysterectomy on her if she wasn’t conscious.
Meanwhile, it was during an appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live in 2023 that Naga first shared details of suffering from the debilitating condition and revealed how she was even in pain during the show as a result of it.
In what has been a hugely impressive career in broadcasting, Naga’s career in television began when she landed a role as a reporter on Reuters Financial Television, but since then, her career has continued to flourish having earned roles on CNBC, Channel 4 and now BBC News where she has become one of the most familiar faces in television.

What is adenomyosis?
According to the NHS, adenomyosis is: “a condition where the lining of the womb (uterus) starts growing into the muscle in the wall of the womb. There are treatments that can help with any symptoms.”
While some symptoms can affect those during their period, symptoms can also be present at anytime during the menstrual cycle, with the NHS citing pelvic pain, bloating in the tummy (abdomen) and pain during sex as some of the symptoms that those suffering with the condition can expect. However, some sufferers don’t have any symptoms of the condition.
While the condition is more commonly diagnosed in those aged over 30, it can affect anyone who has periods.
