George & Mildred is the latest show to be hit by warnings by ITVX as it claims some scenes could be “offensive”.
A classic comedy has been hit by trigger warnings on ITV as it “may cause offense” – but now the broadcaster has faced criticism for its decision. The 1970s comedy, George & Mildred, has been hit with a notice on streaming platform ITVX, saying it contains “classic British humour from a bygone era”.
George & Mildred was one of the spin-off series from the very successful Man About The House, which ran on ITV from 1973 to 1976. It followed George and Mildred Roper, played by actors Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy, were the landlords of the boarding house where Chrissy, Jo and Robin shared a flat.

In one episode, they were trying to get their dog, Truffles, to mate as she wanted it to have “everything in life that I’ve never had”. But it also saw her husband George discussing their dog’s lack of interest in sex.
Despite some raunchy references, fans of the show were in disbelief over the warnings given by ITV. Free Speech Union founder Toby Young fumed: “George and Mildred? Really? What’s next?
“The Magic Roundabout on the grounds that viewers with hyperactivity disorder may find the character of Zebedee triggering?”
Another fan wrote: “It’s happening more and more. Was watching George and Mildred just waiting for the funniest bit and ITV cut it out and there was a warning the other day before Only Fools and Horses about out dated language now Midsummer Murders.”
One more added: “You know the countries f***ed when there’s a ‘warning’ at the beginning of ITV’s re run of George and Mildred.”
George & Mildred, which ran from 1976 to 1979, was loved by millions of Brits, with viewing figures of up to 18 million. Tragically, Yootha died in 1980 aged 53 while Brian passed away last month at 92.
Murphy passed away at his home in Kent on Sunday morning (February 2) with his friend and agent Thomas Bowington describing him as a “joyful and profoundly good-hearted man”.
He is survived by his wife, Hi-de-Hi! actress Linda Regan, and his two sons. Ms Regan said: “I was lucky to have in my lifetime found my soulmate, Brian, who I will love forever.”
