BBC’s University Challenge shocked fans who flooded social media with comments after Amol Rajan confirmed a correct but ‘rude’ answer.

UC: Contestant quick to answer question about Robert Koch

Fans of University Challenge were highly amused with one answer on the academic quiz show. Amol Rajan was back as the host as he welcomed two teams of students, past and present, to compete in the BBC show.

The presenter asked the teams: “Born in 1843, which German scientist gives his name to a set of four postulates, sometimes also named for Jakob Henle, that may be applied to determine whether a disease is caused by a…”

At that point, one player buzzed in as she thought that she prematurely knew the answer. Willis on the Darwin team confidently answered: “Koch?” Amol replied: “It is Robert Koch, well done.”

But the rude sounding answer caused fans at home to flood to social media in a frenzy of hysterics. One fan comedically theorised: “I think the question setter for #UniversityChallenge gets someone to shout COCK to boost the twitter algorithm.”

Another echoed: “It’s not a coinicidence is it, when the question setters give someone the opportunity to say things such as COCK and TIT at Amol as answers to questions,” following by crying laughing emojis.

One more said: “Somebody has just won a bet in the question writing department on #UniversityChallenge #Cock.”

“If I appeared on #UniversityChallenge and my only contribution was shouting cock (Koch) at Amol Rajan, I’d be happy,” another joked.

In another recent episode, an impressive contestant was dubbed an “absolute machine” after helping Imperial College London annihilate the University of Oxford’s Wadham College.

Player Jaime Salamanca Camacho, a Master of Science in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces postgraduate student in the capital city, left fans in awe as he ensured his team’s victory in an intense second-round battle.

Imperial steadily crushed the competition, leaving viewers agape as they racked up a towering lead of 290 points to Wadham’s null score with less than ten minutes on the clock.

Despite a valiant effort towards the end, Wadham was only able to muster a slight 25-point comeback against Imperial’s seismic 345-point finish.

Even seasoned presenter Amol Rajan, 41, expressed sheer astonishment at the team’s extraordinary victory. He said: “Well, what can I say? (Wadham) you were up against an absolutely ludicrous team. I mean, they are absolutely phenomenal.

“No one could be in any doubt watching you what a bunch of enormously brilliant and clever young people you are, so thank you so much for playing so well. Imperial, that’s a big score and it’s going to scare the other people. Well done.”
