BBC viewers have said the broadcaster owes Professor Robert Winston an apology after he was allegedly “blacklisted” for his comments on Question Time in 2021.
BBC viewers have claimed the broadcaster and Question Time presenter Fiona Bruce owes Professor Robert Winston an apology after he was “blacklisted” over his comments on the political panel show in 2021. During a debate about trangsenderism, the professor argued that people are unable to change their sex, due to it being connected to them in a variety of emotional and physical ways, and he has barely been seen on TV since. He also feared he would be sent “hate mail” for his comments, as he warned Fiona Bruce they may need to “edit the show”, to which she replied she was “bracing herself” over his comments.
Professor Winston said: “I will say this categorically, you cannot change your sex. Your sex is actually there in every single cell of your body. You have a chromosomal sex, you have genetic sex, hormonal sex, psychological, brain sex, they are all different.” The professor went on to comment on the difficulties of talking about these topics without facing a backlash.

As Fiona put it to them that he could be seen as being “transphobic”, he said: “Unfortunately you cannot say this publicly, this is one of the big problems. Even saying this on this programme will undoubtedly result in me getting a huge amount of hate mail.
“It always does. Overall I think it is a very sad thing that we cannot discuss biological science without getting completely caught up emotionally in something that is completely wrong.”
Following his speech, Professor Winston did not appear on the show again, and has rarely been seen on TV since. Following the UK Supreme Court ruling that legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, the clip has resurfaced, with BBC viewers claiming the broadcaster owes Winston an apology.

One said: “Who would like to see Professor Robert Winston back on TV? Plus the BBC owes him a apology!” Another added: “This courageous expert in his field said what we already knew to be true years ago was destroyed and vilified.”
A third chimed in: “The BBC and Fiona Bruce need to apologise to this wonderful man,” as a fourth raged: “That public declaration from Prof Winston should have settled the trans debate right there and then. But, no, the debate had to carry on until it reaches the Supreme Court. Thank god, wokery was not served on the day. And yes, the @BBC owes him a big apology!”
The BBC has been contacted for comment by Express.co.uk.
